'in/tangible cartographies – new arab video' was commisioned by World Wide Video Festival 2001, and especially curated by Jayce Salloum.
An epic work on nostalgia [L f. Gk ('nostos' return home, 'algos' pain)], not the saccharine kind, but the heaviest of passions compelling the heart. The remembrance of cinema past, a neo-realistic surreal absurdist-like phoenix rising from the dust, broken bits, and pieces of film littering the theatre floor. Soueid reassembles a mix of wonder, queries of the lens, probing and gliding behind the camera at a close but respectful distance, "in those early days and amorphous years when life was full of beginnings and ends everything seemed to be forever..." A mystery, love, war, or daily life story? A spoof, or parody full of stories like a veritable house of cards or the unfathomable Pompeii 'Villa dei Mysteri'. What finally succeeds in being an ornate and eloquent Dadaist episode on forgiveness, turns out to be not about love but a search to prove love exists and that "friendship is the preservation of love."
