'sulsouth – voyages into mutant technologies' has been curated by Jose Ferreira. It was first shown 26 April – May 13, 2001 at the Instituto Camões, Centro Cultural Português, Maputo. Jose Ferreira is an artist born in Maputo, Mozambique. He lives and works in London.
A black screen with the sound of deep breathing fades slowly into the image of
a sleeping man lying with his head on a table surface; the breathing his own. At a certain moment, the breathing stops, followed immediately by a twitch of the head - perhaps a nerve impulse reacting to a thought in the sub-conscious. The lips slowly open; copious amounts of red liquid pour out onto the table, slowly bleeding into his white shirt and flowing towards the eye of the camera. Having reached its furthest point, the liquid then slowly starts to retract, removing itself from the shirt, seeping back into his mouth which then closes again.
