Early 1963 Sylvia Plath, the American poet, brought her life to an end. At the time of her death she was thirty, married to the English poet Ted Hughes and mother of two children. Her life alternated between moments of elation and mental depression. Later in life she fought a continuing battle to bring her identity as a writer into harmony with her identity as a woman. Her life is reflected in the huge number of letters she wrote to her mother. Rose Leiman Goldemberg wrote a play based on these letters which underpins this video presentation. In it Chantal Akerman demonstrates that much is possible beyond pure reproduction. Through framing, editing and the sound track, an important new piece has been created. Coralie and Delphine Seyrig, directed on stage by Françoise Merle, moving present this duet of mother and daughter, supplementing each other, singing independently or addressing the audience. In particular the face of the incomparable Delphine Seyrig, born in the same year as Sylvia Plath, mirrors all hope and despair.
