Mr. N's diary (1938-1967)
  Hungary 1989
Videotape, 52:00, black-and-white, mono
Mr N. does come into shot, but remains even more anonymous than, for example, Jenö who supplied the material for another instalment from the series on Hungarian life by Forgács. Only when he becomes engaged to Ilona (1938) do we see him boastfully performing gymnastics on a bridge next to a swimming pool. He is a military engineer and he uses his camera at many national events, such as army parades, speeches by admiral Horthy and large-scale catholic processions. Some impressions of the lives of Hungarian Jews are also included. Naturally, N. uses his camera to record his first child (1941). Only his uniform betrays that this idyll is threatened. After baby 2 (1942) follows the entry of the German troops and then, with alarming speed, babies 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. The multitude is nicely divided: four and four. Then the Russian army marches in and many parties follow. Later, he extensively records the uprising of 1956 showing the desperation and devastation. The next shot is distressing: a fair. This life report of N. and Ilona ends in 1967, peacefully in the garden.
