Darya von Berner has been making temporary murals on the walls of museums, art galleries and instituted in various countries for many years now. Enlarged representations of endangered animals are adjusted and painted in relation to the architectural space. After a time, the painting is removed to be used elsewhere at another geographical location. In this way, an image migrates through various cultures and architectural settings. These physical manifestations now extend into the digital domain of the Web. Departure point is the Galeria Metropolitana's web site in Barcelona, where, at this moment, a large mural of an elephant is being exhibited. The picture is offered on the server in printable fragments, while guest servers are sought that, in succession, will house the project. When the project moves across the Web to a subsequent server, one fragment of the painting remains behind. And so March of the Elephants leaves a trail across the Web that can be picked up and followed by a passing web surfer. Following the links from site to site, he can follow the track back to the source or in the other direction, to the current location. In the digital environment as well, the transitory nature of the physical work reflects the limitations of time, as that applies to our own lives, but in particular to ethnic groups and animals threatened with extinction.
