  Japan 1982 / 1981
Videotape, 8:00, colour / 12:00, colour
Distortions make 'Silence Mécanique' a lyrical picture of mechanics. Movement, represented by the closure of a camera shutter, a running motor, a dance. The movements are mainly circular and Shinohara has strenghthened them by treating the centre of the image with a circular wipe. Distorting the convergence of the camera produced the double image on the mask. In 'Cubist's Fantasy' Shinohara was inspired by tbe famous Zen-Buddhist monastery garden at Ruyan-ji in Kyoto dating from the 15th Century. The walled garden consists of an immaculately raked lawn of quartz pebbles with five groups of rocks in the form of mountains, fifteen in all. The space is virtually empty and greatly stimulates meditation. Wherever you stand, you can never see more than 14 of the 15 rocks. Shinohara ignores this fact and concentrates on the meditation of the singular object. Using square and rectangular wipe-forms he releases details from their background until they dissolve into other images.
