A selection from the unique ten-episode video magazine 'Alter Image', made by the video group After Image for Britain's Channel Four. Each episode presents a number of individuals or groups from the 'alternative' arts circuit. The items have in common a shared concern for the design of the presentation, in which the specific capabilities of the medium video are applied in a functional, original and attractive way. There are major differences in the type of items chosen and in the way they are approached: beautiful Japanese Buto dancing; a humourous comic-strip approach to teenage love; hilarity at the paintings of Jock McFadyan; travelling through the 'wardrobes of the mind', a video work about clothing by John Scarlett-Davis and lain R . Webb; the photographer and painter Georges Rousse choosing to work in derelict buildings; poet and singer John Giorno; mystic African ballet situated in two cultures.
