The Algiers Incidents

  USA 1980 / 1982
32 min (48 incl. CBS), colour
On 8 November 1980 a white policeman was murdered in a black suburb of New Orleans. Based on statements made by witnesses under duress and later retracted, the police raided two houses and shot three blacks dead, because they allegedly resisted arrest. Lawyers asked Densmore to gather on video evidence which pointed to the fact that the action was retaliation by white policemen against blacks, revenge for the murder of their colleague, who washowever killed by two whites, according to the evidence of a 'mystery witness'. The material was shown during the legal enquiry. In March 1983 three policemen were eventually found guilty of using violence against witnesses; four others, including some involved in the raids, were cleared. The video was used in a CBS current affairs programme in 1982, but with an introduction. The contrast between Densmore's work and the television product centering on a popular narrator is so striking that both will be shown.
