We are in for a treat when industrious filmers visit strange religions and exotic cultures. Shamans, whirling dervishes and tinkling begging monks dance after each other before a colourful back-drop. All the world's religions in five episodes: it's always time for a procession. Fortunately Reeves doesn't drown in such clichés. He chooses material which does not appear relevant, but which nevertheless reflects his Zen-like approach to the essence of Buddha Amida. As the buddha rises from the water and sinks again, a dog carefully rescues a flower as it drifts off. What does it mean when Reeves looks through the barrel of a gun at a flight of geese, or when he records the cruel incidental destruction of a rodent? The symbolism is occasionally too morbid: three falling coins, a block of wood split. The closing quote trom Tozan - Marvelous! Marvelous! How mysterious the Inanimate Teaching! - does have a satirical overtone, but is still rather unnecessary with the visual power of this video.
