In 1981 Shinohara created 'Cubist's Fantasy'. Images of a Japanese cloister garden in which fifteen rocks stand in a garden of pebbles; wherever you stand, no more than fourteen are visible. Just as the garden is ordered for meditation, so Shinohara orders his images using square wipes. In 1982 a second version followed: 'Cubist's Fantasy II', in which the cloister garden is once again the subject. Computer animation is used to bring stones to life. Above, 'Western' neon advertising intervenes and the image changes through blocks into the Bamboo Kids, representing the fusion of Japanese tradition and American culture. 'Keep your mind open and you can see things as they are.'
