The Netherlands has a historic tradition of showing hospitality to refugees frorn throughout the world. After their arrival, the media tends to forget about them and how they get on. 'La Carta de Diego' concentrates on the continuing story of about 3000 Latin American refugees in Holland. Pegged onto the correspondence of Diego with friends and comrades in Latin America, the situation sketched is far rosy. After the initial reception, the refugees are left to their own devices. They don't feel at home, they have problems with Dutch pigeon-holing which contrasts so sharply with what they are used to; they long for their country. Often their isolation is only increased by their lack of financial means. In addition to the dramatized sections the programme consists of interviews, documentary shots and archive material telling the history of Latin America: a chain of exploitation, repression and the for freedom from Columbus up to the day.
