Just as true poetry needs but few words to express our deepest emotions, so Marie André makes but scant use of text to accompany her gripping images. In the closed masculine world of seamen, pimps and Johns in the dock area of Antwerp, Anita - alias The Rose - leads a disconsolate existence, characterised by fleeting, anonymous contacts with her insistent clientèle. In her innocence, she harbours a true but impossible love for her pimp, who periodically makes demands on her income. Self-deception seems the only means of survival, but fate turns out to be, for her, ineluctable. The final image willlinger in the mind.
