The rucksack of the average modern intellectual is stuffed with odd tidbits of alarm about the consequences of nuclear catastrophe, scraps of philosophy concerning bewildering time-space warps in 'black holes', and a sentimental nostalgia for the time when television was still plain back and white and tinned laughter was fun, and for the same well nigh unrecognizable world in which cows were milked by hand. Luckily, further reflection on this pot-pourri sometimes gives rise to a meaningful silence. Baiser offers an ironical résumé of interactional patterning and social stereotypes, without bothering to wipe the blood-stains from the screen. He seems to imply that we suffer from an idée fixe similar to that of the Sambi of New Guinea, who are scared to death that their supply of jerungdu (sperm) will give out. Perhaps extinction is the only solution for us too.
