Novalis (1772 -1801) is considered the foremost poet of the early romantic period in Germany. He studied philosophy in Jena and law in Leipzig. In 1795 he became engaged to the thirteen-year-old Sophie von Kühn, who died two years later of tuberculosis. This experience of love and death summoned from Novalis a short.lived but exceptionally intense period of poetic creativity. The lyrical section of Bódy's triptych, based on Novalis' poem 'Walzer', portrays the fleeting joys of youth. This poem emphasizes the need to enjoy these passing pleasures to the full. Ars longa, vita brevis. The final image confirms this: of the care-free times of yester-year only photos remain.
