'Répons' is like a candle standing before a set of mirrors. Suddenly, as happens in the hall of mirrors of an ancient château, the candle multiplies. A single candelabra produces a magic effect.' Pierre Boulez. This is Cahen's film of composer/conductor Boulez with his Ensemble Intercontemporair performing his own recent work 'Répons'. The result is a highly spectacular recording, in which the traditional synchronization of sound and image is repeatedly shattered, as if for fear of the images becoming merely illustrative. Boulez is assigned an exceptional position, in view of the fact that he, as it were, is in control of Time. The soloists and other members of the orchestra must do without any direct cohesian between themselves and the developing music. This video does not only offer the viewer a visual delight, it also gives the listener ample opportunity to immerse himself in the complex world of Boulez.
