You set yourself a scientific problem: A times B is a possibility. If it turns out that that doesn't work, it's a simple matter to try A times C and, to add an extra string to one's bow, you test B times C too, just to be certain. After several negative results, it's too easy an answer to opt for that other famous bunch, X, Y and Z. So you press subbornly on, deciding to change the basic conditions of the experimental set-up. The whole process with A, B and C is repeated and repeated, but always with the same disappointing result. All the same, you can look back on a well-spent day. After all, scientifically speaking, inability to prove positive correlation is a useful result of research, which also has some validity for phenomena in our social lives. You grab a beer with your friends, in the hope that next time… Well, c'est la vie.
