Soft and hard - soft talk on a hard subject between two friends
  France 1985
Videotape, 48:12, colour
With his almost innate souplesse, Godard gets himself out of the problems he himself has raised. He poses in an unusually direct form - the film was shot in his own home at Rolle in Switzerland - the traditional question of whether it is still possible to communicate without immediate distortion, at a time when massacres occur daily in Beirut and the Black Forest is vanishing, and neither event counts as news. This is, notwithstanding, a cheerful and 'soft' film, in which he imitates McEnroe perfectly. Godard interrupts his cogitations with stills from archive films, but when after much thought he puts on a tape in his own video library, he chooses a Juventus match with Michel Platini. Cinema is supposed to be getting nonsensical because we are no longer seeking a path to our language, but 'Quand, o quand' - to quote Miéville - shall we see another such witty offering from Godard?
