This is yet another version of the authentic story of Wozzeck, this time in a somewhat over-loaded theatrical production. The story of the eternal dupe, abused by his betters, consumed by his own jealousy and finally finding peace in death is well-known. Two versions are, however, extant. According to most productions, Wozzeck himself chooses the rope or founders in the morass along with the blood.stained knife with which he has stabbed his wife to death. Other producers leave a question-mark hanging over this apparently inevitable suicide. Here, Hollander uses all the usual motifs and in addition links the story of Wozzeck with the myth of Orpheus decending into the underworld in order to see his dead wife again. His up-to-date, highly theatrical approach produces a unflagging spectacle full of superb tableaux vivants.
