  Mako Idemitsu
The marriage of Yasushi
  Japan 1986
Videotape, 23:30, colour
Because of her poor relationship with her husband, the woman in this story concentrates all her attention upon her little boy. Even when Yasushi finally marries, they are unable to let go of each other. This gives rise to problems between the young couple, and when a child arrives the new father, encouraged by his mother, shows little interest. In this, he is the image of his own father, who had no time for him either. The flash-backs in this story are shown on a monitor, which follows developments in the present as a mostly silent witness. The scenes on the monitor are sometimes brought into the foreground, and sometimes form merely the back-drop for present-day actions. In this way, Idemitsu lends an extra dimension to the traditional flash-back. It now provides not only an explanation of actions in the present, but also, an alienating and therefore exciting extra level in the narrative. The common-place little anecdote is subtly divested of cliché.
