  Tony Labat
La jungla (between light and shadow)
  USA 1985
Videotape, 12:56, black-and-white
In simple, sometimes almost freeze-framed black and white images, Labat seems to be offering a record of one day in the life of a man and a woman. They do not talk to each other, but the images suggest the relationship they have. A text accompanies the images, running along the bottom of the screen. The words run on without punctuation and bear no relation to the image narrative, although they do react to the rhythm of the mechanical camera movements. The text recounts, from a first-person stand-point, meetings with a witch, with Picasso in a restaurant, with Jackson Pollock almost setting fire to himself on a beach, and with a relative of Albert Einstein, Karl. The anecdotes lead an independent existence. The images of the saxophonist Ben Bossi provide a third narrative line. In 'La jungla', Labat is playing with traditional narrative codes. Doing so, he makes use of people who were also no respecters of traditional boundaries.
