In any heated discussion about prisoners' living conditions you're likely to hear it said that these days prison is more like a private hotel. Watching this film, it quickly becomes apparent that the inhabitants of these resorts see things very differently. Six longterm prisoners play themselves and act out their own real lives: lives that consist in being sealed off from the rest of the world. The minds of the men become obsessed by this basic fact, and they put into words the powerlessness and hopelessness of their existence, and their anger against the society that treats them this way. To the disinterested observer, it quickly gets to look like a sort of Ealing Melodrama. But perhaps that's just leaping to conclusions?
