Blind country
  USA 1989
Videotape, 19:56, colour, mono
Based on H.G. Wells' 'The country of the blind', performance artist Mike Kelley plays a blind, naked man who, homeless and robbed of his sense of authority and masculinity, experiences a personal crisis. In all its strangeness, 'Blind country' is as compellingly melodramatic as it is cynically alarming. Whereas the sighted protagonist of Wells' original masterpiece ends up in the land where all are blind, Kelley's and Beckman's hero is himself blind. In his crisis he goes through hell. He learns to survive by using his animal instincts. But then, as if by miracle, the man regains his sight, only to be confronted by a new, chromium coloured and glass hell: that of urbanisation.
