The machine that killed bad people
  USA 1989
Videotape, 120:00, colour, mono
A man is reading a newspaper It's about a bloody clash at the time of the fall of the Marcos regime in the Philippines. He is not struck by the journalism of the report, but by the fact that he was an eye-witness of the revolt. In fact, the report serves only as a catalyst for emotions he has previously experienced. It is also brought into question if the report can stand up when the reader has nothing else to judge by. Fagin clearly thinks that it cannot, pointing to the usual state of affairs whereby the media, applying their so-called 'neutral' reporting, in fact negate every possible involvement and insight into such questions. Interviews with people about their expectations of the new government of Corazon Aquino form part of this critical discussion. In 'Virtual Play ...' and 'The Amazing Voyage ...' Fagin turned his attention to figures such as Nietzsche, Flaubert and Roussel. Now he seems to want to incorporate the documentary using the same multi-layered style.
