After the revolution in 1917, dwellings were built in Russia in which the lives of the citizens could be closely monitored. These dwellings (which have something of the air of student flats) are characterised by communal facilities. We are allowed to share the daily activities of the residents of such a house. Little harassments like peering through the key-hole when there are illegal gentleman callers, irons stolen to be used as dumb-bells and the gas that is turned off under the kettle of a fellow resident. As this unmannerliness threatens to escalate, things take a new turn. An official arrives with the announcement that the owner of the building wants to use it himself and that all residents will be allocated their own dwellings. For the first time, they eat together in the communal kitchen to celebrate this happy fact. Only Löynschik, a nihilistic student and lover of resident Natasha, refuses to believe in it. He tries to convince them he is right and just as they are about to throw him out, the doorbell rings...
