In Sao Paulo's red-light district, it teems with just as many women, offering themselves as merchandise, as in any other large city. The scene is supplemented by the inevitable drugs trade, gambling houses and police. This documentary is the result of years of research and social work amongst the prostitutes. The opinions of the women about their activities are rather varied. A few see it as their way of making a living, although most would not advise it to anybody. They only do it to earn the daily necessities: money for rent, for the education of their children, for food on the table. Disarming is the confession of one of the women who discovers to her surprise that this work provides much more money in a shorter time than any other job! But it remains a question of running from the police and desperately they wonder what will become of them. If they have a dream of the future, then it is usually to become an American citizen, or to build a better existence for themselves (but then by way of theft).
