Diesseits und jenseits der Deutschen Grenze (Gespräche im Herbst 1989)

Videotape, 44:28, colour, mono
In the race to provide 'news', 'something new', the situation surrounding the Berlin wall was pushed out first place in the media some time ago by the Iraq question. Only a few things need to be settled now and the DDR will for ever belong to the past, or so it looks. That it could be different appears from these interviews with eye-witnesses, recorded at the end of 1989: about the peaceful demonstrations that were forcefully broken up, about the arrests, the time in the police stations and the downright fascist behaviour of the policemen. About the family that fled when Hungary opened its borders, but the Wall was still standing. Their expectations of the future are sombre, certainly when one considers the great flow of fellows in adversity who will follow. Within this context, the West German creative teacher tells of the psychiatric problems of the refugees' children. She uses drawings to illustrate these problems. In the end a fitting distrust of the leaders of the country remains. Although, with some good will, one can say that the political situation in East Germany is still changing, critical reports like his are still sorely needed.
