Le roman de Fauvel (Fauvel's novel)
  France 1991
Videotape, 69:55, colour, stereo
As she did in her previous production, the maker once again produces a perfect coherence between romantic and illustrative images, intriguing texts and remarkable music. This time, a thirteenth century manuscript, full of festively coloured miniatures and sharply written, minute writing, has inspired her to make a twentieth century version in the form of a Music Video Book, designed with help from the computer. Leafing through, we follow the adventures of the horse Fauvel (F = flatterie/flattery, A = avarice/greed, U = vilénie/villainy, V = versatilité/capriciousness, E = envie/envy, L = lâcheté/gluttony). The world's goings-on are denounced in this satirical fable through a carnival like reversal: the Pope is rich, the king a liar, the priest full of sin, sales people know no truth, workers no loyalty and judges no compassion. The universally worshipped Fauvel ultimately seems to taste defeat, but, helped by his bride Vanity, he attempts to regain his power!
