Les zapotres / The zapostles
  France 1996
Videotape, 3:22, colour, stereo

The electronic church service commences. In turn, the ZAPostles preach the new gospel; the existence of an international order. "Let us communicate in peace", "Believe what you see, that is the source of truth." We believe what we see through a cathode ray tube. The screen serves as a virtual bible and is the carrier of a new religion: "Multimedia". Using multimedia, people are linked intercontinentally, satellites know no borders. This apocalyptical video work broadcasts a rapid flood of audiovisuals, a flow of images and words that emanates from a transformed and digital world. The viewer, who is rapidly bombarded with all this, can do little more than succumb to the overwhelming multiplicity of effects. "Listen to the beautiful words: Virtual virtuosity works wonders", preaches one of the ZAPostles. And mankind consumes the new truth. The new truth is cast in the form of the cross of death. It is the iconography of Les Zapostres which warns against the flip side of the promised land. Using little, fleeting symbolic signs, Lannaud looks critically at a possible future perspective in which the influence and the power of the image(screen) should not be underestimated. Lannaud gives cause to reflect: "Big ZAPostle might be watching you".
