Flash is an international contemporary art/music project whereby visual artists from home and abroad, contemporary composers and musicians are invited to react to each other from within the context of their own disciplines. It is about the development, execution and presentation of nine DVD's.
A small garden with huge trees on a sunny spring day. For the next seven minutes an explosive fragment of music clatters through the roof of leaves. The follow-up is more difficult to interpret. The driving dynamics of the music composition, the direct message and the sustained notes of the soprano are in sharp contrast to the searching, somewhat out of control camera movements. The lens seems to scan the trees, the branches and the leaves in search of some sunlight, a clear sky. The music climbs to higher and higher registers; the images preserve one fixed tone. What remains outside the image? This is all we have to go on, the camera movements do not after all phrase, as it were, any formal question.

The computer was used for all parts in 'Big Jumbos' to make changes to a given theme. From the hundreds of thousands of possibilities the changes which suited me best and which were closest to the original idea were selected. For its basic theme, Part 1 has a guitar rock-lick, but with uneven time (2x5). Part 2 ('Swinging in the Wind'): like clothes hanging on a clothesline, flapping in the wind; like a deserted hotel somewhere in America, with tattered curtains flapping through open windows. Part 3 is with singing. A woman wants to be played on like a conga and offers up her 'jumbos' for 'him' to play on with his ding-a-ling (a word coined by Chuck Berry). A small, randy, lively motif in which the scorching notes rub against each other lighting the ecstatic fire of (musical) love is at the basis of this part.
