Faces change slowly. Photo portraits of anonymous men, women and children from different cultures and of different colours gradually blend into one another. They seem to be from distant lands, from a distant past. They are images frozen in time, prints of a past reality. The faces are isolated from any other hint of the times, only the physiognomy can give us a clue as to the kind of life and world that hides behind the countenances of these people. 'Wanted' is about classifying people on the basis of outward appearance, a raging topic today in view of recent technological developments, also manifest in Moilanen's (computer)animations. The work is based on archive material from the Uppsala University Institute for Racial Biology in Sweden. The Institute was closed in the Sixties and the building is now being used for research into genetic manipulation. The question being asked here is: Does today's research into genetic manipulation give justification to the studies of races and peoples carried out in the last century? Again and again we see animations of the same well-built, white male. The perfect (male) example of the Aryan race. Moilanen uses animation techniques to show that it is also possible to make changes to this 'perfect' person. Moilanen is well-known and highly praised for her unique animation techniques. In her audio-visual work she combines film, photos and 2D- and 3D-animations to create a new animation style. She works as a computer graphics artist on multimedia and interactive programs, is a graphics designer and directs video and TV productions. She also teaches in her field at several institutes and schools in Finland.
