World Wide Video Festival moves to May 2003
The jubilee edition of the World Wide Video Festival
will take place in the spring of 2003 and will
highlight 'media art: the past 25 years'. This will
give us more time this year to prepare an extensive
restrospective exhibition with over 30 installations
from previous editions of the festival. There will
be solo exhibitions by, among others, Éder Santos
(BR), Marina Abramovic (NL) and Walid Ra'ad (LB),
installations in the public space in Amsterdam,
a media lounge for recent single channel productions,
a 'meet-the-artist' programme, performances and a
seminar. The festival opens on May 8, 2003. More
details about all this in the next newsletter.
As of 2003, the annual World Wide Video Festival
will take place in the spring.

Festival website
Over the next few years the festival website will
develop into a dynamic forum for current media art.
Also, the history of 20 years World Wide Video
Festival will come to life by enhancing the online archive with moving images and sound. The website
will also offer more service to audience and members
of the press, e.g. by making it possible to book
hotel rooms, order passepartouts and reserve tickets,
and buy the festival guide online.

Presentations of selections from World Wide
Sao Paulo Biennale
Papisthione, the 18 year old Senegalese artist,
whose confrontational and poetic film 'About the Life of Children in the XXIst Century' caused quite
a stir among the audience of last year's festival,
has since this presentation been invited to take
part in the Sao Paulo Biennale, that started in
March. He has also been invited to become a student
at the Art Academy of Cologne, Germany. The young
Dutch/Turkish artist Ebru Özseçen has been selected
to represent the Netherlands in Sao Paulo. Her
work 'Bitter Chocolate Love' was shown at the 17th World Wide Video Festival 1999.
Cape Town / Johannesburg
From 18 February until 10 March 2002 an exhibition
was organized in Cape Town, South Africa, consisting
of works from the 19th World Wide by Tracey Rose,
Minnette Vári, Matthew Hindley and Fernando Alvim.
All of these works were the result of co productions
between the artists and the festival, with finacial
support by HIVOS, a major fund for collaboration in
development. The event was an initiative of the WWVF
and Malcolm Payne - visual artists and professor -
whose work has been shown at World Wide in 1998 and
2000. The exhibition also signalled the opening of
Cape Town's first centre for media art.
Tracey Rose's installation 'Ode to Leoness' is
currently at the 'Playtime' exhibition in
Johannesburg.
