Pierre Huyghe
The Third Memory

France (1999) installation

One of the most spectacular media events ever was the 1972 Brooklyn bank robbery which was covered live on TV. Sydney Lumet based his feature film Dog Day Afternoon on the robbery. Almost 30 years later Huyghe asks the real bank robber to help with filming a reenactment of the holdup. In The Third Memory Huyghe combines live TV footage of the original robbery with excerpts from the film and scenes shot of the reenactment of the holdup to show how reality, fiction, memory and the media all influence one another.
